CABMEN AND THE RAILWAY DEPARTMENT.

Cancellation of a Cabman's

License.

At a recent sitting of (he Masterton S.M. Court, a local cab-driver was charged on the information of Mr Hill, stationmaster, with a breach of the Masterton railway regulations, by refusing to obey the orders of thestationmaster, when told to deposit luggage at a place ordinarily assigned for that purpose.

The facts of the case showed that the cabman had been employed to take a passenger and luggage to the station. He appeared near the ticket office with three parcels of luggage, shortly before the arrival of the 1 o'clock train. He proceeded to put down the luggage opposite the door of the ticket office. When depositing it there, Mr Hill, stationmaster, came up and told him to drive up to the south end of the platform, which would be in conformity with the official regulations. This he refused to do, and ultimately proceedings were taken. His Worship held that there had only been a breach of and not a breach of the by-laws. If the former were broken, the Bailway Department could cancel the cabman's license. He dismissed the information with £1 Is costs. Notice of appeal was given.

As a sequel to the case, it is understood that the Railway Department has now cancelled the license of tho cabman concerned. All cabmen, who are not licensed by the Bailway Department, are in future to be excluded from the railway premises, when in pursuit of their avocations, which means that they must deposit passengers and luggage at the station gates, whence the Department does not provide means of renjbying luggage to the station. ■'.
