Masterton Club v. Thursday Eleven.

IBy "The Bowler."]

A match between the first eleven of the Masterton Club, and a team selected from the Thursday Clubs, was commenced on the School Grounds, on Saturday last. Masterton went first to the wickets, and compiled the large score of 193 runs. Mawley (50), Perry (32), Redmond (24), and Swan (21) were the highest scorers. The Thursday team, at the close of the day's play, bad lost 4 wickets for 26 runs. The detailed scores are : —

As the Park Oval was occupied with another match, Mr Jackson kindly placed the School Grounds 'at the disposal of the Masterton and Thursday teams. A good wicket was prepared. The Masterton Club's team gave a good display of batting. Mawley, who was top scorer with 50 runs, did not shape any too well at the start, but when he settled down, he played fine cricket, placing and hooking with good judgment. Perry was at the wickets for two hours for his 32 runs, and I noticed that his batting has improved on the leg side. Iledraond gave a good exhibition of clean hitting, included in his score were three o's and a 4. Swan shaped well, making some nice leg strokes. Williams did not waste time while he was at the wickets, his score of 18 was knocked up A jn about five minutes. 4B j Barlow was the most successful of the bowlers. He varied bis pace and pitch, and the ball that took Parton was a " clinker." James keeps well on tbe wicket, and bowls a good length, but to bo successful he must vary his pitch mor«'andtry,*ancl.bowl for his field.

The ground fielding of the Thursday's was good, but the catching was disappointing, and several easy chances were missed.

The Thursdays have a good wicketkeeper, in Lamming, as he takes the ball quickly-and. well.

Four wickets down for 26 runs is not a very promising start for the Thursdays, but, the remaining batsmeu may make a good stand. Parton and McKibbon bowled well for Masterton, the former obtaining the line analysis of three wickets for six runs. C. Williams was in good form behind the wickets, taking the leg balls particular lv well.

The thanks of the cricketers are due to Mr Egan, for arranging the above match. Friendly games between the Saturday and Thursday players will go a long way to improve cricket in this town.

The match is to be continued on Saturday next, and the Thursday team still require 87 runs to save a follow on. A little incident cropped up on Saturday which I very much regret. When play was ready to commence it was found that the bails were wanting. Application was made to a cricketer, who enjoys the reputation of nothing less than "captain " to one of the local club?, to supply the want. For reasons best known to himself, he declined to lend the bails, although some of his own club mates were taking part in the match.
