AFTERNOON SITTING.
The House met at 2.30 p.m. THE WAKATIPU SERVICE. After considerable further debate on the Lake Wakatipu ferry service, the report of the Committee was laid on the table. WAITOMO COUNTY BILL. The Waifcomo County Bill was brought down by Governor's Message, and read a first time,
MIDWIVES BILL. Amendments to the Midwives Bill were brought down by Governor's Message. They allowed another year in which midwives now practising may be registered ; also empowered the Governor to make regulations respecting the use of drugs by midwives and defining what shall be deemed to be malpractices by midwives. The amendments were agreed to. NATIVE LAND RATING. The amendment made by the Legislative Council in the Native Land Rating Bill were disagreed with. COMMITTEE REPORT. The Extension of Commerce Committee reported that it could not recommend an increase of duty on imported woollen material. The Committee also recommended that further investigation into the state of the tobacco industry would be made next session. LAND FOR SETTLEMENT ACT AMENDMENT. In moving the second reading of the Land for Settlement Act Amendment Bill, the Premier pointed out that at present it sometimes happened that when the owner ot an estate which the Government sought to acquire had taken out his portion the remainder ,was found to be absolutely valueless. This was particularly the case in respect to mixed hilly and swampy land. In such case the Government, under this Bill, would have power to discontinue proceedings. The debate was interrupted by the 5.30 adjournment.
