IN AGES PAST.

Mr Clement Wragge's Theory.

A Vast Continent.

In the course of a press interview at Auckland. Mr C. L. Wragge said be firmly believed there was at one period of the earth's history a vast southern continent, including the islands of the Malay Archipelago, New Guinea, Australia, and New Caledonia, and that another great mass of land existed, joining New Zealand across what is now the South Pacific with the wonderful Easter Island, or, as it is called by the natives, Eapanui, which is over 10,000 miles from" tbe coast of Chili. lie also believed the Maori race was cf remote antiquity, and its ancestors were probably connected with those wonderful people that erected what are the most remarkable ruins of the world— vi::.. those of Easter Island—probably older than those of Central America, and certainly infinitely more ancient than the Egyptian temples, the Sphinx, Pyramids, and Baaibek. In fact, the Easter Island ruins probably belonged to n, period of civilisation in many respects far superior to that of tho present day, and go back fully 800 ; 000 years.
