AUSTRALIAN POLITICS.

{Received This Morning, at 12.50 a.m.)

Melbourne, Last Night.

When the debate was resumed to-day on the motion to re-conitnit the clause dealing with preference to unionists, the Opposition adopted an attitude of silence. None spoke, leaving the discussion to the Ministerialists, who uttered bitter remarks at the way the Government were being treated.

The division resulted in the defeat of the Government by 36 to 34.

Mr Deakin voted with the Opposition, and Sir Win, Lyne with the Ministry. Several members supported the Government on the ground that it was only fair to allow the re-committal of the Bill.
