At a special meeting of the Borough Council, last night, a rate of 15 16ths of a penny in the pound was struck for the borough as the general rate.

A meeting of the Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club was held yesterday afternoon, when the balance sheet and report were passed. These showed that in spite of bad weather at their last race meeting the Club had made a profit of some £300. The overdraft was now aboufi i>lloo, but during the year a new grandstand had been erected at a cost of aboufc £1300, and a very considerable sum spent in planting the grounds and improving the course. Mr Buchanan, M.H.R., was elected Patron, Mr X. Grace President, and Messrs G. Tully and Hugh Morrison vice-Presidents. Ifc was resolved to add £5 to the stakes for third horses, and to make the total stakes £1200.
