Tue abattoir business, in a town like Masterton, is so closely connected with fanning that the Borough Council might do well by obtaining a report from the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association before proceeding with its quest. The fanner supplies the raw material, and he also requires the refuse of the works in the form of manure. The true interests of the town would be best served by working hand in hand with the country. A picked committee from the A. and P. Society might make suggestions of great practical value in deciding the issue. Of course the final verdict rests with the Borough Council, but it will be unsatisfactory if it does not prove to be in the best interests of the farmers who will act both as its suppliers and as the consumers of its waste products. The obvious danger is that a narrow view may be taken of the larger interests involved, and a great opportunity lost of developing local trade and enterprise.
