The younger generation in Masterton, as well as a sprinkling of elders, depend very much for their winter recreation on the Masterton Gymnasium and Training School. Two hundred and twelve members on the roll may be said to be kept healthily occupied during leisure hours by tbis institution. The of progress during the past year was exceedingly gratifying, and if it has carried with it an overdraft approximating to JG2SO, it possesses assets that justify the debt. The Gymnasium, with its debt of two hundred and fifty pounds, might take a leaf out of the records of the old Masterton Park Trustees. That body, many years ago, found itself saddled with a similar liability, and would possibly be still subject to it had it not taken up five investment shares in the Masterton Building Society, and every month paid five-and-twenty shillings in liquidation of its debt. The day did arrive when the shares matured, and the debt disappeared altogether. The Gymnasium will need the major portion of its income to carry out its progressive policy, rather than to extinguish debt ; therefore a system under which it could be gradually liquidated without crippling extension might be of value.
