DWELLINGS CONDEMNED.

Telegraph — Association) Auckland, This Daj.

Dr. Makgill, District Health Officer, has reported to the City Council, con demning a large number of large dwellings of the poorer classes in the cicy as unfit for habitation, both in regard to the ruinous state of the buildings, and the insanitary nature of the yards and general surroundings. He suggested that as far as possible the Council take steps to get rid of the dwellings and acquire some of the " degraded dens " uader the Municipal Corporations Act, and erect model cottages of from four to six rooms, to be let ac rentals of from four to eight shillings. Till some such provision is made for the poorest class, Dr. Makgill sajs the question of improvement cannot be fairly tackled.
