HANDSOME NEW RESIDENCE.

An Ornament to Masterton.

Undoubtedly one of the finest residences in Masterton, from point of architecture and convenience of internal arrangement, is that just completed in Victoria-3treet,by Mr C. E. Daniell,to the order of Mr Chas. Cameron. The house is eet well up on a concrete foundation, and the site being of gravelly formation, a first consideration of health conditions is secured. The bouse covers a space of 60ft by 40ft, and it- divided into fourteen rooms. Each room is well lighted* and ventilated, and finished in a most elaborate style, the whole of the windows having coloured glass transoms. The main entrance door is approachedj by broad concrete steps, while two verandahs, well arranged, give cosy open-air spaces. The wall and roof outline is broken in several places by projecting windows of varied design ; these being finished with bold moulded wood and ironwork, give an effect at once substantial and pleasing.

Entering to the right, we find a drawingroom that must delight the taste for artistic appointments. It has Hexagon windows, with tower and finial, is papered in greyish blue, with a twelveinch scroll, and a highly-polished grate set into the chimney-piece, with tiled hearth and mantel-piece of a unique design. The corner skirtings and mantel-piece are picked out in two colours, formiug a pleasing contrast. The entrance hall is 36ft long by 6ft 6in wide, with fluted pillasters and Gothic arch, supported by a heavy cap and carved brackets. The walls are covered with a paper of floral design, with Anaglypta dado flattened out in tint to match the paper. From the centre of the arch a large incandescent hall light is suspended. The papers for the whole of the bedrooms have been well chosen, as also for the dining-room, the latter being an exceptionally large room. Electric bells have been fitted throughout. Spacious kitchen and bathrooms, with hot and cold water, are provided, and every possible convenience installed, and a thorough system of sanitation secured. The house is painted in neutral green, with Persian stone relief, champs and mouldings in bright red, and the roof in red oxide. The verandah has a freize rail of thistle design, painted in Italian white. The house was designed by a Dunedin architect, but Mr Cameron entrusted the carrying out of the work entirely to Mr Darnell and his staff, who have evidently spared no pains to give satisfaction. The necessary fencing, drainage of grounds, etc., is now in hand, and when completed Mr Cameron will have a beautiful home, and Masterton another distinct ornament, from an architectural point of view.
