To our mind, tho following sentence strikes the key-note of the " Budget " :— "Every year since the Liberal Party can?e' into 9 ffice tlie Government, b y their prudent" administration in maintaining a Strong'finance'a_4'insuring the spending powers ol the people, havetioeni able to announce a surplus on the year's transactions." The Government has a good word to say for itself; indeed, there is a so-t of " Praise-us-from-whom-all-blessings-flow " aroma kb&ui tho statement of the Colonial Treasurer, whether the strong finance has been secured by " squeezing epry mop," or by the invention of the Cream Separator, is a matter for argument. As to the real finanpial position of the Colony, no one
is able to speak with authority excepting the Colonial Treasurer ; and he tells us what he wishes us to know, and withholds from us information which he considers to be inexpedient for us to be acquainted with.
