THE VOLUNTEER BALL.
A Pronounced Success.
As anticipated, the Masterton Volunteer Rifle Corpa' annual ball, held in the Drill Hall last night, proved to be the most enjoyable and pleaturable gathering which has eventuated this season ; and, as it is an event looked forward to with a considerable amount of interest year after year, there was a large attendance, fully ninety couples being present. Some of the dresses worn by the ladies were exceedingly pretty, and contrasting with the evening suits of the gentlemen and the uniforms of the Volunteers, made up a most attractive and animated scene. Usually the main features of such functions as these centre, in the decorations, and it ia no mere figure of speech to say that this year's preparations eclipsed all former attempts, and the interior of the building presented a picturesque and striking appearance. Innumerable flags were suspended across the ceiling, and mingling with the dainty evergreens and ferns on the walls were flags, patriotic transparencies, military accoutrements, mirrors, etc., the display reflecting the greatest credit on the decorative capabilities of the combined committees,'and particularly Sergeant-Major Brighting, under whose supervision the decorations were carried out.
Much attention and careful proparn. tion had evidently been given the floor, for this important item was another striking feature of the ball, and was, in a great measure, responsible for the thorough enjoyment of all participating. Mr Eeihana Boyes' orchestra supplied the music, and Captain Blythe, Lieutenant Christie, Sergeant-Major Brighting and Private Ayson assisted in the formation of the square dances. A sumptuous supper was provided by the lady supporters of the Corps and residents of Masterton, and was very tastefully set out on the stage of the Town Hall.
The committees of management, with whom were associated Sergt. Carpenter and Private K. Murray, as joint secretaries, carried out their multifarious duties in a thorough manner, and to the individual members of these committees is duo a word of prais9 for the very complete and satisfactory arrangements. During the ovening extras were played by Mrs Burns, Miss Archer, and Messrs A. F. McMinn and G. H. Goodall.
