Anthrax.

A serious outbreak of anthrax which occurred at liraybrook, adjoining the city of Footscray, just outside the Melbourne Metropolitan area, was mentioned in the cable messages some days ago. Eight cows have died from the disc ise, which has been proved by bacleriologi cal tests to be true anthrax. Tho virulenco of the outbreak may be judged by the fact that a resident of Jiraybrook fed three dogs on portions of dead cow. All three died within twenty-four hours. The district is largely dairying, the greater portion of the milk being sold in Kuotscray, while the rest goes to Melbourne. The diseased animals grazed ovor about WOO acres, Twenty dairies and about 1000 cattle aro estimated to be within tho infected area. The health authorities have stopped the sale of milk and butter from tho district. All cattle are to be quarantined. Attempts are to be made by burning and disinfection ol paddocks, iis well as by preventive inoculation of the yurviviiig cattle, to slump out the disease which is thought to base been brought to the district by herds of starving cattle seeking pasture.
