PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT.

A Contrast to His Predecessor,

Mr Eoosevelt, says a Washington cor-res-pondenti is jrapidly showing that he proposes to conduct his office on different fines to those hitherto adopted. The presidential mansion, tbo White House, is now being renovated and refurnished at a cost of £72,000, and is destined to be tho scene of various magnificent functions the winter season. The Maythe splendid steam yacht purchased by tho Govornmonf from Mrs Ogden Goelet for ovor £100,000, is being refitted at a cost of about £10,000, and will then be used as the President's yacht. Whon completed it will bo a voritable floating palace, equalling, if not surpassing, that of any European monarch. These and other extravagances haye aroused a certain amount of criticism among Mr Roosovelt's political opponents, and are condemned as undemocratic. Mr Roosevelt ■will shortly make a tour through the COijntry, ostensibly to show himself in view of the second term, but his prospects are not encouraging. The loaders of tho Republican Party aro not entirely in sympathy with tho President, and nearly all the measuros ho ha 3 recommended to Congress havo met with defeat.
