TAUERU NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The district is gradually assuming a Spring appearance aud will soon be a picture of green and gold formed by the springing grass and blooming wattles. A change to milder weather is much appreciated by all out-door workers.

With the change of season has come a change in the personnel of our township. Mr Loader and family have gone to Masterton, where he has entered into the carrying business on his own account. Mr Hill, who has been in charge of tho blacksmith's shop for soveral years, is leaving to commence businejs at Tenui. He will be much missed from his place as Chairman of the jkobl Committee. Mr Chamberlain, sor in the shop, is well-known tn the* district as a former resident of the township.

News of the probable abolition of the toll-gate was received with much satisfaction by those who frequently pay toll. As tho busy season will soon begin, it is unlikely tho County Council will be anxious to lose such a valuable source oi *» revenue as the wool season and travelling stock produce.

The fourth concert and dance of the winter series took place last Thursday night. Besides tho local talent, Mr Hudson, who received a benefit on the occasion, was assisted by Mrs Mcintosh and Mr and Mrs Goff, of Masterton.

Bush-falling is progressing rapidly on Messrs W. and H. Boefcham's property, near the sawmill, and there will be a glorious blaze when it is set on fire. While firewood is becoming very dear in Masterton, here are 700 acres about to be destroyed for want of cheap transit. There will not be timber enough for sleepers when a light line is started to the Coast.
