[n 1871 Mr Charles O. Noil, C.li., instructed by the Provincial Government, prepared a plan of the llimutaka railway, in which he proposed to tunnel the saddle for a distance of IiJO chains, and thus give easy access to tho Wairarapa. He estimated the tunnel to cost £68,000, but now-a-days it would probably cost twice as much. A comparison between the cost of railway construction thirty years ago and at the present time would, we beliove, oiler some surprising contrasts. Tho economical construction of railways in this Colony is a lost art!
