At Saturday s mooting of the JV asterton Racing Club, when tho question of the appointment of a handicappor was under consideration, a slight passage at arms took place between Messrs 0. A. Pownall and A. G. Pilmor. Mr Pownall mentioned that ho had heard there was an under-current at work against Mr J. I<j. Henrys, on the part of aggriovod owners who were also members or stewards of the Masterton Club. Mr Henrys, ho believed, had boon threatened to the effect that it would bo made " warm " for him by a certain person. Mr Pilmcr said he understood that Mr Henrys had written to several stewards, and perhaps Mr Pownall had been the recipient of a letter. There was a marked lowering of tho tcinporaturo this morning, in Masterton, followed by a tolerably heavy sprinkling of rain, with ititlications pointing to fiii'thci' rainfall. On inquiry at the Hospital, this afternoon, we learnt that there was a slight improvement in tho condition of the injured man, Gimther, but his state is still exceedingly critical. An address on "Mission Work" is to be given in St. Matthew's Schoolroom to-morrow evening, at 8 p.m., by Mr J. Holloway, Secretary to the Now Zealand Church Mission Society. Yesterday tho Venerable Archdeacon Dovoy, provincial of tho Marist Fathers in Now Zealand, celebrated the twentyfifth anniversary of his elevation to tho priesthood. Messrs Wise and Knight, of Eketahuna, this morning negotiated the sale of Mr James Elliott's Eketahuna saddlery business. Tho purchaser was Mr If. Gtealhcad, who for some time past has been managing tho business. Sixty-three cases of scarlet fever were reported to the Health Department during the month of August, including tho Wairarapa and Taranaki districts. One third of them occurred in Wellington City. During the last four months 291 cases havo been reported. Sixty-four cases of tuberculosis (consumption) have been reported to the Wellington Health Department, in the districts of Wellington, Wairarapa and Taranaki, since tho beginning of April. In the same period and districts there were forty-two cases of tyhoid. The freight on cattle from Napier to Sydney is £3 ss, irrespective of weight, therefore only heavy bullocks will be sent. Tho insurance is 5 per cent, selling 2.J per cent, yarding about % per cent." In addition there are feeding, wharfage and shipping charges at each end. Sheep freight is 7s Gd each, and the above charges are to be added. The members of the Ground Committee of tho Masterton A. and P. Association visited tho grounds on Saturday, and recognised the necessity for protecting the 1 windows at the oast and west ends of the Grandstand with wire netting. It was also considered advisablo that the space left for ventilation in the partition between tho Grandstand seats and the : luncheon rooms should be so covered by , barbed wivo or netting as to prevent a free passage into tho rooms. A deputation irom tho Mastcrton Cricket Club waited upon the Ground Committee of the A. and P. Association, relative to the application to bo permitted to lay a concrete cricket pitch on the Association's grounds. Ihe Committee visited the Show Grounds, and Mr Stuckcy moved, seconded by Mr D. McGregor" that the Cricket Club bo allowed to put down a concrete pitch on that part of the ground which is used for draught horse class; that the rent be the same as charged the Hockey Club, and that the Cricket Club enclose the pitch with a substantial fence at such times as the Ground Committee shall decide upon. Mr F. Moore moved an amendment that the Committee cannot see its way to allow laying down a concrete cricket pitch on the Association Grounds. Tho amendment was carried. Messrs Auketell Brcs., elsewhere notify that five head of mixed cattle have strayed from their Akura property.
