Carterton, This Day. A young son of Tuki Mahupuku died at Gladstone. A tanrji is to be held.

The induction of tho Rev. J. Bates, recently appointed to the Carterton and Gladstone Churches will be held on the 28tb inst. Professor McKenzie will probably give an address in the evening. A meeting of ratepayers of the Taretahi Water-race District, was held on Tuesday, when the Borough Council's offer to buy water from the Water-race Committee was considered, but not approved of. Tho Water-race Committee's offer of i>7so was finally accepted, the Borough also to share the cost of maintenance.

At a meeting of the Farmers' Union, on Tuesday, Mr W. Fisher was appointed Chairman till next meeting, and Mr G. B. Sykes (of Masterton) Secretary. The next meeting will be held on the third Tuesday in September. The business transacted was purely routine.

Thero is some talk of forming a Coursing Club here. Already some 40 names have been handed in as being willing to join. When a hundred persons guarantee membership, a meeting will be called. •

Thero were no Court cases down ".for hearing on Tuesday, and the Court was not opened.

The Technical School Committee have decided to canvass for subscribers.

Tho local band will render a musical programme to-morrow ever'ng, in High> street.
