MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Ordinary Meeting.
Tho ordinary mooting of the Master* ton Borough Council, held last night, was attended by His Worship tho Mayor (Mr P. L. Hollings), and Ore E. E. Chamberlain, J. Elliott, E. X, Jackson, W. Morris, E. G. Eton, D. Caselberg, J, C. Ewington and J. A. Rennll.
An account of £19 9s 0d duo to tho Railway Department was passed for payment. Maurico L. Chamberlain, junior clerk, made application for an increased salary. Councillors spoke in high terms of praiso of tho applicant's work, as also did the Enginoor, and on the motion of Cr Morris, seconded by Cr Ronall, it was decided to raise tho applicant's salary to 25s per week. A communication was rccoived from His Excellency tho Governor rogarding the proposed establishment of a Homo for aged vetorans. Tho matter was re- c ferred to tho Coronation Committeo. « The Secretary of tho Church Brigado wroto requesting an extension of the gas mains to a hall in a right-of-way off Dixon-streot. The matter was referred to the Gas Committee.
An application made by Mr G. E. Chamberlain, of Upper Plain, for connection with the water main passing his property for domestic purposes only, was referred to the Engineer to report upon at next meeting, after conferring with tho applicant.
The report of the Gas and Works Committee was road. Tho recommendation to obtain an additional cart and horse was objected to by- Cr Elliott. Ho moved that the item bo struck out, and was supported by Crs Morris and Chamberlain. Tho Engineer pointed out that tho expenditure was provided for in the estimates of £1000 for streets and roads. Councillors mentioned that they were not aware that the expenditure was provided for in the estimates; and tho Mayor agreed that tho Council should abide by their estimates as closely as possible Cr Elliott's amendment was lost, and the report was adopted. The Finance Committee's report was read and adopted.
Tho payment of £150, to be subsidised £for £by the , Government, towards Coronation celebrations, was passed. "^^
It was decided to hold a special meet- ; ng on Thursday, July 10th, to strike a general rate of 2d in the £ on tho unimproved value, a library rate of &d in the £, and water supply rate on tho samo scale as last year. The next ordinary meeting was postponed to tako placo also on tho Thursday night. In accordance with notice of motion given Cr Jackson moved that tho expenditure of £200 on the re-organisation of tho Corporation offices be not taken from the library account. He thought it unfair to divert tho money in the way proposed. Cr Eton moved that tho proposal to spend £200 bo rescinded as he considered tho expenditure was unwarrantable. Cr Caselberg moved a further amendment that the reading room be improved and tho remaining expenditure bo rescinded, the Mayor seconded, and Cr Jackson withdrew his motion. After considerable discussion it was decided to abandon tho whole expenditure.
