HOUSE CONNECTIONS WITH THE BOROUGH SEWER.
The Council to Take Action.
The matter of the dilatoriness of houseowners in connecting with the Masterton finage scheme, was considered at the jncil meeting last evening, when the gineer reported that he had notified all owners west of Queen-street, to get the necessary work carried out but without any beneficial result, although tho time allowed had now expired. It was pointed out that the failure to comply with the instruction was all the more to bo regrotted when tho insanitary state of that portion of tho town is taken into consideration. The Engineer recommended that the Council should undertake the supervision of any work done privately, as that would be moro satisfactory. At the present time owners were humbugged fry plumbers whom they employed, and •jvho delayed completion of the work for several months, thoagh some of the plumbers were all right. The Mayor recognised that tho time had arrived jvhen the Council should take a firm stand in this matter. Ho moved that the Engineer have full power to prosecuto owners for continued neglect to Connect with the drainage, in 3uch cases as he considered necessary. Cr Hollings favoured doing tho work for poor people, and giving them time to re-pay; but, he did not think tho community was so poverty-stricken that they would all reqtrlM, the Council to do tho work for v9m£ nor did he think the Council was in such a flourishing state as to be able to undertake the work. It would not be desirable to make tho practice universal. A resolution, moved by the Mayor, was eventually carried, to the effect that the Council is prepared to undertake the drainage connections at the expense of the parties interested, cither for cash, to bo arranged with tho Engineer; or, in special cases, on timo payment.
