The aim ami object of the Government for some time past has been to make Saturday afternoon tho statutory hallholiday for workers. If the Government had put its foot down, and had possessed tho courage of its convictions, it would have settled the matter by appointing Saturday afternoon a holiday throughout the Colony, and making Friday the
weekly pay-day, Aa things now arc, tho weekly half-holiday is a sort of muddle which gives littlo satisfaction to tho community as a whole. Either tho Government should take the matter into its own hands, or leave it for tho good sense of employers and employes to adjust. Tho present position is one of " botvvcen two stools." The Masterton Borough Council has decided to retain Thursday for the weekly half holiday, but a conference between the Employers and Employes, prior to the question being dctormiiicd, might have led up to a better understanding of tlio position.
