IN MEMORIAM.

The Late Richard Speight,

Mr Richard Speight, whose death has just been announced at Perth, Wcstralia, made his name as Chief Commissioner of the Victorian Railways. AVhat Eddy did for New South .Wales, Speight did before him for Victoria. Before the advent of his management no Australian railway had been a paying concern; but Speight, with a free hand, transformed tho Government railway system of the golden colony into a revenue-producing investment, Unfortunately tho leviathan press of Melbourne criticised the Commissioner's methods, which ended in his retirement, and a now-historic law-suit, which wound up practically in smoke—except for the lawyers, Whctovcr may have been Speight's faults, in his own line he was unrivalled, and tho Victorian railways owe him a debt of gratitude, which, in the eyes of commousense men, is immeasurably increased by its being unacknowledged.
