THE NEW COUNTY.
The gazetting of tho new Masterton County, and olection of Councillors, is being delayed owjng to differences aj regards representation. It was originally proposed to divide'the County into six Hidings, gjviqg two representatives to each of (he three larger Killings, and one membor each to thoothers, Alfredton reckoned on getting two members, but when tho tug-of-war occurred it found itself in company with To Whili and jjppor Taueru, with only one member, ivhile ltangilutoau had two. Protests ensued, and to gc). ovor tho difficulty, it was'proposed (ogiye 4lfredton. its two member.', and lump llangitumau and Uppoi; Taucnj together, making that one Hiding with two nicuibers, instead of twoljidings wjththreornembors. Agaiust being swallowed ii) this way, tho Upper Taueru petitioned to a man, Then camp (ho proposal to leave tho Upper Taueru and Hongitumau separate, and allow them each ono member, hut whilo Mr J. Stuckcy and some .other largo ratepayers consider this arrangement fair, a number of others object on tho ground that eight miles of the Maslerlou-Upper Tauom-road are included in tho Hangitumau riding, and the ratepayers there may bo culled' upon to defray the maintenance of a main lino in whiob they are not represented, Tho Colonial Secretary presumably will have, lo faco the difficulty after the manner of a, modern Solomon; otherwise the machinery the new county may be suspended till doomsday.
