At a meeting recently held ia Alfredtuii it was resolved, on the molion ol Air Holmes Warren, seconded hy Air (J. Kebbcll, to ask Messrs A. W. Hogg, ,1. O'Moni'il mid (}, Iliinti'i'i iM 11.11,'5, lo urge the Government to construct a light railway through this district. The proposed line would connect Mastcrton uml Afrcdtoa m Wanguchu,and llicncc up the Tiramnea Valley to tlio l'ukcloi llanges, and omvnrd to Polyoma ami Welicr, connecting with Jhc mainline of railway at Dancvirkc. It will ho pointed out that the proposed light railway serves 250,000 aires of Government hind, already partly settled and capable or sustaining a population of '1250 souls. It will also be shown lliat tlio area includes line forests of totnra, snilnblc for milling purposes, and lliat the proposed railway would enable enormous areas of good timber lo he marketed instead of being destroyed, and llic ran mills established would solve I lie unemployed question by profitably 'absorbing a large number ol bunds. It also claimed that the area would open up new and valuable dairy country, and that as there is little or no road metal available in llie district it cannot be economically opened up by ordinary roads. The Government are lo he asliod to rend a competent engineer lo make a living survey of the district, and lo gather infonnalion, not only with respect lo limber, but also lo probable coal products available in tin? ranges.
