BISHOP WALLIS IN MASTERTON.

SOCIAL GATHERING.

Asocial lo welcome Bishop and Mrs Wallis, was held in St. Matthew's Schoolroom last night, the building being must comfortably filled. 'Excellent refreshments wero provided by tiio ladies of tho congregation, Mrs Jaines Nicol presiding over tho tables. The stage was nicely arranged and furnished as a drawing-room, MrsTabutoan having kindly superintended this work. During tho evening an excellent musical programme, arranged by Mr M, Meadows, was played. Mys ti, Gordon Eliott kindly lent her piano and played several accompaniments and other musio.

Bishop Wnllis, in tlio course of a very lmppy speech, spoke of the joy of being again in Mustertoii, and the warm nud hearty reeoption accorded him 011 all hands. He also alluded to the lato Bazaar which His Lordship said had been such a success as to becoino the talk of the diocose, and lie thought very hearty thanks wore duo to tlm lady workers for their splendid efforts. Alluding to Bazaars and Sales of Work gonerally, h'o said while many expressed disapproval of such methods of assisting tlio Church funds it could not lie denied that many were given an opportunity of working for the Church in this direction, who would otherwise not be roached. His Lordship also mentioned how pleased ho was to find an increasing feoling o£ unity amongst Church poople throughout the diocese, There was n growing demand for tlio Church Chronicle, whioh was a good sign, and he advised all to take the publication, as it would keep them alive to tlio work going on, On behalf of Mrs Wailis and himself he had to heartily thank the people of St. Matthew's Parish for their very kind roception.

Theiiishop-was heartily applauded aud after his spoech a pleasant hour was spent in a social manner, the affair breaking up about ton o'clock. Tho following are the items included | ill Mr Meadows' programme:— |lntermezzo, "Aerial," Orchestra; banjo duct, Mr Russell; song, " Dream of Bethlehem," Mr W, Jago, (violin oblignto, Mr Meadows); gavotte," Modusa," Orchestra; song, " I lovo you still," Mr Meadows; cornet solo, "Voilci," Mr Irvine; piano duet, "Qui Yive,"'Mrs Gordon Eliott and Mr Meadows.
