THIS WEEK'S HALF-HOLIDAY.
Masterton shopkeepers do not seem to understand that the legal halfholiday this week falls on Friday. Of course they can close on Thursday if they think fit, but with respect to Friday afternoon they have no option. The law makes it a compulsory half-holiday and there is no choice. Under the circumstances it is provable that next Thursday afternoon will not be observed as a holi> day by the tradesmen of Masterton. The Minister for Lauds stated, in the Garrison Hall, Dunedin, that he attached no moro value to a Crown grant than ho did to. a piece of waste paper.—Comment is needless. The St. James' Gazette in commenting on somo of the fantastic and outrageous attempts at new legislation of tbo New Zealand " Seddon " Government recommends that the legislative machine should be taken out of the control of such " Cranks," " Faddists," and assorted " Idiots," More settlers were placed upon the Crown Lands between ißß4tind 1890 than lmve been by the Seddon Government during the six years they have been iu office, with not half the number of forfeitures. Government statistics provo it.
