THE WAIRARAPA CONTEST.
—* — • ALLEGED ILLEGALITY, A PROPHETIC ARTICLE. ELECTION INVALID. (By Telegraph—Omi Correspondent). Wellington, Sunday. I learn on the highest legal authority obtainable here that the Wairarapa election will have to be declared invalid, through the action of the Jleturaing Officer in refusing to accept Mr Coleman Phillips' nomination on tbe 26th November. Under the Electoral Amendment Act of 1896, the Statutory day for closing of nominations was the 27th. It would thus be seen that there is nothing for it but to fight the | election over again, This will probably give the Government a stronger candidate than Mr Hornsby, who is certain to be defeated by Mr Buchanan.
People are beginning to talk about this extraordinary state of affairef In view of the appointment of the present Returning Officer nnd the somewhat prophetic article in the Wairarapa Daily Times of 23rd November, it looks as if tho Government supporters wore endeavouring to steal a march on Mr Buchanan, and. in view of such unfair tactics, it is all the more necessary that all bis supporters record their votes on December 4th.
