WHY A HOLIDAY WAS GRANTED.
[to THE EDITOH-] Sib,—l heard to-day that the Public School is to be closed for the last tlireo days of next week, and on asking the reason why I was told that Thuriday was made holiday so as to allow the school children to take advantago of the cheap excursion train to see the Exhibition at Wellington, and that Friday was grabtf d as a holiday to allow screral of the teachers to act as Deputy Returning Officers at the General Election, Saturday, of course,is the usual teacher's holiday, and I do not think it fair that school teachers who aro in receipt of regular pay should be employed for such work when there are plenty of persons competent to fulfil the duties who would be only too glad of the opportunity of earning the fee. I think the School Committee deserving of censure for allowing the school. to be closed on Friday for the purpose referred to I am, etc., Fauplat. Maiterton, Noy. 28th, [Our correspondent is altogether mistaken, Friday was declared a holiday at the request of the Head Teacher, who stated that after the excursion the children would be too tired to work properly.—Ed.
