MR HORNSBY AT TAUERU.

—♦ — (Fro n Our Own Correspondent.) llr J. M. Hornaby addressed the electors in the Taaeru Hall on Saturday evening. The Hall was full, the audience including a number of Maaterton residents who had driven out. Mr J. Mcßae was voted to the chair.

Mr Hornby commenced his addresß by referring to the charges that had been made against him. He stated that lie had sent for. his wife, who had at great personal inconvoniencecome to the ffairarapa to refnte the charges in connection with her. With regard to the other charges Mr Hornsby read telegrams he stated he had received from his father in Tasmania, the Charitable Aid Officer, and the Premier, all exonerating him from the charges. He announced his intention of proceeding against x Hays and the WaiBABArA Dailt Times for criminal slander. The candidate's address dealt mainly with the land question, and hewasspeciallycomplimentarytothe Hon. J, McKenaie. Hisromarks were mostly a repetition of bis speeches in other parts of the electorate. At the conclusion, a numberof questions were asked and amvered evidently to the satisfaction of the questioners, except one re the Banking legislation. In answer to a questionre the Cheviot Estate, Mr Hornsby drew a glowing picture of that favoured spot, and declared it was returning a profit to the Government on the outlay.

Mi 1 T. P. Lett, in proposing a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker, characterised the speech ns the best ever delivered in the hall, stating at the same time that he did not identify himself with any party in the election. The vote of thanks and a similar one to (he chairman was carried by acclamation.
