WOMEN'S FRANCHISE.
(Received November 28, 7.30 p.m.) Melbourne, November 27.; A conference of representatives of the country municipalities to coneider the Constitution Amendment Act. resolved to petition the Legislative Council to reject the Bill. 1 Slong objections is raised to giv- *fing women votes pv It was stated at the conferencb that 90 per cent of women had notbj'*}* ing to be responsible for, and there ■'* was not 5000 respectable women who wanted to vote. There were simply afew who were always wbiningabout the sins of the world, and these , wanted to vote for a special' purpose. The shifting and shiftless population, including women, whom it was proposed to would become a dominating power 1 in legislation, and thus; a most irresponsible section of the community would bave tbe prevalence of Parliamentary power in their hands. The new departure, it was thought, would be misohieyous, and against the interests of ratepayers and producers.
A proposal to give one vote for" manhood suffrage and pother for' thrift, and to confine yomanhood suffrago to women rate-payers, was largely supported.
