MR HOGG AT BIDEFORD.
—« — A LOW ATTACK ON A PKOMINENT SETTLER.
At Mr A. W. Hogg's meeting at Bideford on Wednesday eyening an incident occurred of a nature, which should go fartoprove theutter unreliability of the reckless statements made by the supporters of the present Government, ■ Mr A, W. Hogg had been declaiming against the iniquity of employors in discharging men who had voted for himself. MrTorrey, a strong supporter of Mr Hogg, got up and stated that he knew personally of one case in the District where tho bread had been taken from the mouth of the worker because of his political views. Mr 0., E. Cockburn-Hood who was present, said "Name your man," whereupon Mr Torrey accused Mr Cockburn-Hood of being the employer alluded to.
Mr Cuckbnrn-Hood indignantly demanded proof of this statement, and Mr Torrey then said Mr Simon Method, of Upper Taueru, was his authority, Mr McLeod was present and was appealed to by Mr Cockburn-Hood, the former at once denying that he badever stated anything of the kind, Mr Cockburn-Hood then turned to Torrey and said " I give you the lie direct, Sir." Mr A. JR. Perstop then got up and called attention to the fact that it was Mr Hogg's meeting, Mr Cockburn-Hood apologised for the occurrence, bnt stated that no man of houour could quietly submit to such low and unjust accusations without resenting them. The meeting evidently agreed with Mr Cockburn-Hood and showed plainly its disgust at such contemptibly low tactics. ,
