Messrs Lowos wid loms hold a general sale at their rooms to-morrow, which will include furniture, produce,' confectionery, cutlery, and some very choico fowls. On otir first page will bo found a displayed announcement of a lung-worm specific for which Messrs Lowes and lorns are sole agents, and to which highly complimentary testimonials aro appended from Mr J. S. Handysideand Mr James Macara. A motion was brought forward at yesterday's meeting of the Wairarapa Worth County Council to ask the Government to place the Eketahuua to 1 Daneyirke via, Alfredton lioad on the schedule of Government lioads. The motion was lost. A number of drunken Chinamen were noticed staggering, up Qucen : street last evening.. Mr Cook, the Taueru roadman, Las earned great praise from the residents of the Taueru district. Ho has shown discretion in the performance of his work by making all the dangerous places on llic road in question perfectly safe. Pigs are in demand, and settlers who are happy in the possession of projective baconcrs have virtually nil unlimited market opened to them. In another column the Wellington Bacon Factory advertise for no less than ten thousand pigs. Owners can obtain full particulars as to terms and quality of animals required by communicating with Messrs W. Dimock and Co.
A general meeting of the Taueru Amateur Dramatic Club was held at the Taueru Hotel on Wednesday evening, Mr Cktwin in tho chair, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. All accounts against the Club were passed for payment, A hnatty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr G. Mcllattic for his generous donation of two hundred and fifty feet of timber given for enlarging and improving the stage in tho Taueru Hall. It was decided to hold another entertainment on July dtli,
Mr C, E. -Brcmnor, Engineer, to the North County, in his report, states that complaints having again been lodged of the neglect shown by the maintenance contractor in keeping the fences and floodgates of the reserve he occupies on the Bowlands boundary at Eorokoko, lie hus been ad vise d tl lat iu future any repairs which may from time to time lie consi dercd necessary will be performed by the Council and charged to his account. The Stock Department has also been applied to for the services of their man to dig in the burrows and poison the rabbits on the reserve, notice having been given that the adjacent properties are suffering from the raids of the County rabbits, This here thing of the tailwaggin' the dog isfoundcdorifact. In his report to the Wairarapa North County Council yesterday, the Engineer stated that on the Masterton to Waimatcroad instructions have been given to tho road-maintenance contractor to proceed to lay the new surface sheathing on the western portion of the To Ore Ore bridge, which at present is much out of repair, and this work will be put in hand immediately. Subject to the Council passing the item provided in the estimates it is proposed to re-construct the culvert ou the main road at tho crossing of the Hospital drain at once. The presont culvert is in a more or less collapsed state and unable to accommodate more than the normal watcrflow of tho channel, which overflows in wet weather to the injury of the road and adjacent private property,
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Masterton Lodgcl,O.O.F.,if,U., was held last evening, and there was a large attendance of members The following were the officers present:— G.M., Bro. Hunter; KG,, Bro. Kershaw ; V.G., Bjo. Apperley. A large quantity of business was transacted and nominations were received for officers for ensuing term. The election of officers takes place next Lodge night. This Society is making rapid progress and its membership of late has increased considerably, and it has under consideration at the present time the desirability of forming, at an early date,' a fomalo Lodge, which there is every cause to believe.should provo eminently successful.
Mr C. E. Eremner, Engineer to the North County, iu concluding bis report to the Council, says" I have to express, on behalf of myself and family, our keen appreciation of the Council's kindly consideration towards mo in my recent illness, and to assure thorn that my rapid recoyery is in no small measure duo to the absolute rest I was enabled to enjoy during my extended leave of absence, I have every reason' to believe that a't the expiration of three months my health will he such as to permit of my resuming my usual duties connected with tho inspection of works and other necessary travelling in the district, It! is very gratifying to mo to find that during my absence the works in hand have been most carefully and faithfully conducted by my assistant (Mr Mclaclilan), with tho able assistance of the County Clerk (Mr F, G. Moore) when required."
