It involves an important point to all districtsin which there are native lands or lands acquired from natives, Under the Native County Courts Act, 1886, the Governor may. take roads through

native lands by warrant, without compensation, but may not take roads through cultivations, pahs, or villages, An Act of 1885 defines as [' cultivaiionfl" land sown in artificial grasses. Tlieso are the premises. Tho petition asked enquiry us to tho reason why the Lund Department has not exercised its right and taken a road through Dr Hosking's pro perty at Woraiti. Messrs W. 11. Beetbam, VV. C, Buchanan, M.H.H., andß. D. Dag«, gave evidence in support of the petition before the Waste Lanils Committee yesterday. Mr Hogg, who arrived towards the close of the hearing, after questioning Mr Beetliam, urged that the enquiry should be adjourned to permit of Dr. Hoslting being present, and it was decided to adjourn until 11 o'clock on Thursday, whon Dr. Hoskingand Mr Percy Smith, SurveyorGeneral, will be ex-imined.
