The Mauriceville Ranger.
The following report of Org Dagg and Chamberlain with reference to complaints made against the Mauriceville ranger was read and adopted at Tuesday's meeting of the County Council: " In conformity to a resolution passed by this Council touching complaints wade by certain settlers from Maurioovillc against tho ranger, your committee interviewed the parties concerned and inquired into the truth or otherwise of those charges with the following result, that, excepting an attempt to talco from outside his district Mr McKenzie'a cattle, the ranger has not exceeded his duty; on the contrary, whilst showing a zeal in impounding horses and cattle, he seems to overlook the damage the roads sustain by pigs that are frequently trespassing thereon. That, according to our reading of the Impounding Act, 1884, we are of opinion that the charges made by the poundkeeper are excessive, as, for instance, making two charges for giving notice, and also a charge for feeding a horse that did not require any, as he was just taken off a good paddock, Should our interpretation of the Act be correct we think a refund of 5s each should be made to Mrs Dorset and Mr Seymour. That notwithstanding our very great desire to have the roads protected, we think the infliction of the impounding charges is very grievous to a struggling community, more especially as many of the settlers, whose properties adjoin Crown and absentees' land, are unable to fence in their holdings, We would therefore submit that a modification of those charges in respect of horses, cattle, and sheen, should be mado by the Council, as empowered by Section IV of the Impounding Act.
