The Baripid Clause in the Victorian Licensing Bill \m rejected by the Legislative Assembly under father peculiar circumstances, It was attacked (says tl/e Argus) from different quarters, but was not defended by any me-nbers of the Government, As with wrestlers, there was at first a good deal of sparring for a. hold, and finally the trial of strength was obtained in this way: Mr Bent proposed that barmaids should not be less than 21 years of ago, and Mr Pearson proposed that they should not be required to yjrork for more than nine hours a day, Mr Kerfevd thereupon invited the committee to express an opinion on both amendments, and if they were agreed to, he promised to recast the clause. While the general question was being argued, some other njembors wore busy arranging a compromise, The first vote iwas taken on Mr Bent's amendment, which was agreed to, Then Mr Pearson submitted his proposition, which was altered, and made to provide for eight instead of nine hours work. The committee divided on the question whether the amendment in its new form should be made, and it was defeated by 23 rates to 11, ; Mr Kerferd at once stated that as the compact had been partially carried out, the committee had better throw out the clause. Members were changing back to their seats, at the time, and in the midst of the confusion the Chairman put the question, aijd declared the olauao rejected.

A number of tradesmen and others have been served with notices by the Inspector of Huisances to remove packing cases from their premises, as they'are considered inflammable material under the by-laws of the Borough. We do not know whether this is a correct interpretation of the by-law or not, but think that in many instances tho notice involves a hardship that need not have been imposed, The Borough Council yesterday recommended the Governor to appoint the Mayor to be its representative on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards, The Governor has been further recommended to appoint Mr H.
