Wellington, this day. A shop and house occupied by J. Smith, a Chinaman, at Otaki, were destroyed by fire this morning, It is understood that the insurances on the stock and building are, National 400 and South British 100. The Colonial Insurance Company has received a cablegram from the Melbourne Underwriters Association stating that the barque Locnagar, from Tauranga, arrived at London on May 2nd,.. .
Mamcon, this day. ■Mr Riley, an undertaker of Bulls, died this .morning through inhaling the effluvia from the' corpse of the Parawanui chief Kawana Hunia, while placing it in the coffin last Tuesday. Blenheim, this day. Mr Dodson, M.H.R., addressed his constituents last night, He avowed himself a supporter of Major Atkinson, but would give careful-consideration to the measures of the present Ministry. He strongly condemned Sir Julius Vogel's Financial Policy, but approved of Mr Ballance's Land and Native schemes, He considered the Land Tax undesirable in a young country where half of the adult males were land owners. He preferred a Property Tax. He advocated the' Catholics' claim to a share of the education vote, and severely criticised the present system of education. He ■ thought that the growth of larrikinism and prostitution might be due to State education having lessened the parental control. A vote of confidence was passed.
