Bryce, late Native Minister, made an effective speech last night, His explanation of his defection from the Ministerial ranks was simply this; Hia fellow Ministers did not recognise-to the extent he tried to impress upon them—the necessity for breaking at once and for ever the power of Te Whiti. He was not permitted to visit tho Prophet with a force at his back which would have commanded respect, but temporising measures were adopted, a Royal Commission appointed, and the authority of Te Whiti as leader of the Maories recognised, instead of being once and for ever crushed, He (Bryce) had, on accepting office, certain principles of action for the settlement of Maori difficulties and the advancement of law and order, and in' the settlement of the West Coast difficulty had brought things to such a position that ho thought the fruit of his anxious labors might be gathered ; but his Go-Ministers would not see things in the light he did, and ho had to turn away disappointed. In his opinion, though the Government had done much during the last fourteen months to settle disputes and to establish law and authority, the Royal Commissioner had not succeeded in detaching a single man from Te Whiti, or lessening his influence,
