The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1881.

We were very pleased to find from Mr C. Pharazyn's last letter that he was of the opinion that there are too many Counties in the oolony. We have always been favorable to a union between Counties East and West, and now that a gentleman who is Chairman of one County and a leading representative of the other declares himself favorable to the policy of amalgamation there is a fair chance of it being carried out. We have always recognised that there was the pferjal in the Wairarapa, taken as a whole, fry a grand County, »nd jth.at it was on|y ,au unfortunate and unuatural division which produced two weak ones. The second point which Mr Phwyn lays down j in his letter is that Road Boards in their own sphere of aotion should be independent. To this almost everybody is likely to agree. Road Boards are deservedly popular, and so long as they are kept to their local duties should remain undisturbed. He expressed, however,,anopi{iionashorfctiineago that the Copjty Councils pjjould not be manned by the Roaol Boards, and ,as long as this in not attempted wo would jjavethe. latter treated yith )be" utmost j consideration, The one question which I in the Waivayapa we have to consider, is the union of the two Counties, and for the present we do not wish to discuss many points, raised by Mr Pharazyn's letter—though we shall take an early opportunity of doing so. Wo hope now to see the union accomplished, ,pd wit with some impatience to hear Mr Beethani's opinion on the question. It is uil'deFsfcootJ Jhaji'we shall shortly be favored with addresses i from Messrs Bunny and Beetham, and shall probably have an opportunity of ascertaining from our representatives what their views are upon it, The eptoent always incidental to race meetings frim %ri#j the past week been unfavorable for'ls'consideration of questions of local government, We j are, however, now in this district, more at leisure, and there can be no doubt that for some time to come the proposal for a union between the two Counties will be seriously discussed,
