RABBIT ACT, 1880.

[To the Editor of the Wairabapa Daily.] Sie,—l find under the provisions of this Act that the annual election of Trustees for the Masterton Distriot is' fixed for the first Monday.in March* and as the re-election is.tobe conducted under the Local Elections Act of 1676 ifc* will be necessary to appoint a Returning Officer, in order that the usual notices be given, and,;nomination papers be pro? vided, . . Each nomination paper is to be Bigned by two electors, and by the candidate whom they desire to bring forward: and it is to be delivered to the Returning Officer on the day named in his public notice, and if the number of candidates exceed five, an election will take place on the day named in the public notice. All ratepayers possessed of forty acres of land and upwards will have one vote, and no more. The Rabbit Act appears to me to give a discretionary power to the Trustees either to summon—by which proceeding a considerable sum is lost in Court fees and lawyers' fees without conferring any benefit upon the owner of the land—or to send a man with dogs upon the land of owners who fail to take steps to destroy the rabbits. I believe that the latter course would be the wisest, both for the owner, the district, and rabbit oatohers. Men who keep dogs for rabbit catching are exempt from the dog tax, and no doubt seme active men would make a good a good living at the work. It is to be hoped that the eleotors will see the necessity of electing reasonable and sensible men to carry out the provisions of the Act. I am, &0., Bmoior,
