The Wairarapa Daily. SATURDAY, JANUARY 15, 1881.

At the County meeting on Thursday last an incidentaldiscussion took place on the subject of orphans, in the course of which Mr Coleman Phillips pointed out that, the question of orphanage was quite distinct from'that of the sick and poor; and that the Council should influenco the 'Government to make proper provision for children deprived of their natural, guardians. Mr Phillips'.view is, in our opinion, a very right oiio, and if .the Council did not on the occasion referred to, accept it, it was probably because the members had not thought the subject out, and were not prepared on a moment's notice to commit themselves on a wide question. What is to be done with our orphans 1 is a serious consideration, and one which, sooner or later, will have to be answered. Happily, the majority of them find homes among kind-lieavtecl neighbors, who are sufficiently well-to-do to bear the burden. Still there must be a residue who cannot, as it were, run to earth, and who require to be dealt with and trained into good citizens, The case in point which gave rise to the> discussion at the Council, had been formerly provided for'by the' police authorities;; 'This is an alternative, however, which ought not to find favor'with us. It is not just to assign orphans ■■ to such; a department, The

A Benevolent Society, specially a small one like that which isists at- Masterton, cannot possibly' mdevtako nn orphan, The only solution of the difficulty is an orphantge, and there can be no doubt that an institution of this character ought to be established in Wellington; and that Hie Government and the Counties should come to some understanding by which suitable provision could .be made for all proper cases. We have to thank Pv Phillips for putting a public duty cleavly before us, and if his colleagues did not at first realise the force of his arguments, they may, perhaps, Dn some future occasion be more ready to follow his lead on this important question.' .

The auctions this afternoon are Mossrs J. lorns & Oo.'s sale at Masterton, and Messrß F, H, Wood & Oo,'s sale at.Greytown. MessrsF, H, Wood & Co,, announces for sale on the 29th inst., valuable freehold property, .at -Carterton, and at Mauriceyillo, which are fully described in our advertising columns. ' • ■■ ■ ■ ■'" We understand that the Masterton School re-opens on Monday next 17th inst, It ia hoped that after the long vacation all pupils will return- punctually to date, and end eavour by earnest work to maintain the credit of the school. • The Feirthei-ston Local Board office is about to be altered and refitted, in view of tlio probable holding- of the Highway : Board's meetings therein. A fife-place ia to be added, and the room made a'a comfortable as possible. . . - : . .The. building trade at Waihenga is looking up just now, there being no less than three houses'hi course of construction by 1 one contractor in that township. One of them is a large two-storey building, which is biiilf for Mr. McOleagh,- and when com- [ pleted will bo the finest building in that : locality. Mr W.Boyd is the builder, and is putting tirst-class work into his contract,

At a meeting of the Works Committee of the Greytown.Borough Council, held on Thursday evening, the following tenders were accepted:—Formation Weststreet, 28s per chain; Fisher'a lino, Neils Neilaou, 14s 9d por chain; stumping Kurutuwhiti road, £8 ss; there were no tenders received for gravelling footpaths. It was decided'to take rubbish off Mainstreet by day labor, The Greytown Private Brass Band treated tho inhabitants of Greytown with some very excellent selections on Thursday evening last, . The state of merit to which this Band has arrived under the able and popular leadership of Mr C. Hoi-, lard, hardly leaves anything to be desired, they have not only the leader to thank for this, but their own untiring perseverance in attending practices, and no Band will ever be anythingthat will not follow the Bame rule. The following are the different pieces rendered, as near as possible :- "Little Footsteps," "Good-bye Schottisho," Gallop, " Selena Polka;'! March, "Irish Selections," ."Her Majesty's Polka," "Leila Waltz,"- "Last Rose of Summer," ."Whisper of Love Waltz,." ■ "Launcestpn Artillery March," "Meeting of the Wit era," Irish Selections.' To-night the Burford and Clinton Company make their appearance in Masterton. A treat is expected by all hands, and the manner in which Mr Grattan Riggs has succeeded in pleasing other audiences, the artistic reputation of Mddle Murielle and numerical strength-of the company, ought, to draw a full house. Respecting their opening programme we quote the following from one of our exchanges:—" 'The Yankee Farmer,'" a pioce full of comicalities and pathos so curiously interwoven that from beginning to end tho audience was alternately convulsed with laughter and almost moved to tears. Mr Riggs m the title role is simply perfect and is most admirably supported. We regret that we' did not.hear more of Mdlle Murielle's singing, as her rendition of 'Barney o'H.ea,' was most exquisite. 'Home from the Zulus,' was the after-piece and was brimful of go and fun from rise tofull of-curiam." We-might also noie that such was the success of this Company at Bulls, (hat MrDal?iell the proprietor of the Oriterian hotel bought the house for another night.* ■ The new building fov the Featliersto'n School, replacing the one recently destroyed by fire, was formally taken over from the contractor by Mr T. Turnbull, architect, on behalf of the Education Board, on Thursday last, We understand (hat Mr Turnbull expressed great satisfaction at the manner in which the work had been executed This school is the first that has been built in the Wairarapaon the new style of school architecture ; and is the most handsomely finished and convenient school building in the district, The desks and seats are arranged in tiers, each one raised above the other, so that Iho headmaster can see every scholar at a glance, There are three rooms, which: are so arranged that the headmaster can see what is going on in each without leaving the main room. The ventilation of the building has been made an especial feature There is a revolving ventilator in the top of.each room; and. along the walls and at the'foot of each tier of desks, are ventilating gratings,' which may be closed if required. The doors and fittings are all varnished, and the whole building, within and without, is painted in a first-class manner and in very good taste. The contractors—Messrs ■ Riddick and Cadenhead—have' done their work in- a thoroughly conscientious 'and workmanlike Btyle, and may feel proud to have built the handsomest schoolhouse in.the Valley. .The.architect—Mr Turnbull—lias evidently a thorough knowledge of the way to build a school, and the result will be a healthier • and more comfortable slate of things for? both teachers and scholars in the Featheraton district

The cloud ia evidently' lifting about Masterton, During the past week, there have been quite a number of business transactions in laud and house properties. Messrs R,. Brown & Co. report having sold a section of 46 "aorea on the Opaki to Mr Powel, for £276, .and a cottage and one-sixth of ah acre in Bannister-streot, to Mr F, B. Chalmers,, for £175. The latter was only advertised one day, and there were several applications for it, We also note' that /another section on the .Opaki, containing about-120 acres, has changed hands this week at a fair cash piice, Strangers paying a visit' to" and upcountry settlers arriving in Masterton are often at a loss to knojv which is "the cheapest and best house to purchase all kinds of General Drapery, ..Millinery, Clothing, &o. Schroder, Hooper & Co., Hall of Commerce, offer special advantages in this line' which cannot be met with elsewhere, their stock- being the largest-and best assorted in -the Wairarapa. • Their prices are lower then any house in Wellington, their goods are all new and of.the most durable class, and they sell cheap and for" cash.
