But ajas for promises- especially when they come to us from high places—the deputation never had an opportunity offered them, and the. policeman has had instructions to go at once. The opinion of tho meeting seemed to be that the deputation had been treated with scant, courtesy. It , was finally resolved tha'the Commissioner of Police bo communicated witli, "calling . attention to the fact of the removal of the' ' policeman in, .the face of the promise made by Major .'Atkinson; -algo to Major Atkinson, asking for an opportunity of seeing him, to press upon him the j reasons why this, district 'should not be ( loft without a policeman. Bowies' —ft fair muster of members being present.] Connection was made with the well in thV rear of tho Marquis of Hornianby Hotel," but owing to an insufficient force of waterbeillg obtainable it was as much as the Brigade could do to throw a stream to the eaves of the-hotel.

The Masterton Volunteer Fire Brigade held their usual practice last evening, at which a good muster turned out, and some smart work was done. After practice, a meuting was held, i.t which it was decided to send two delegates to the Fire Brigade Association's Conference, to be held on the 20th inst., at Wellington. . As showing the fallacy of relying on tlie law for assistance in prevonting'defaulting debtors leaving the district, the following incident may prove interesting and instructive.' A tradesman in Greytown recently found that one of his customers was about leaving the place without, settling his account, and on applying, to him for the amount, was treated to some "tall talk." The party left Greytowu and went to Wellington, intending to proceed by steamer to some other district. The tradesman,, .in meantime, prooured a warrant, sigued by two Justices of • the Peace, and despatched one of his men and a bailiff to arrest the debtor, but when the man was found, it turned out the warrant was no. good, as it had not also been signed by the clerk of the court. The consequence is that not only is the original.debt lost, hut the expenses incurred in the eiideavour to prevent the defaulter leaving the country till he could be formally sued, have been a sheer waste of money. Strangers paying a, visit to and up•.country settlers arriving in.Masterton are often at a loss to know which is. the cheapest and best house to purchase all kinds of General Drapery, Millinery, Clothing, &c. Schroder, Hooper* Co., Ball of Commerce, offer special advantages in this line "which cannot be met .with elsewhere, their stock being the largest and best assorted in the Wairarapa, Their prices are lower then any house in Wellington, their goods are all new and of the mast durable class; and they soil cheap and for cash. This establishment is situated directly opposite tlie Club Hotel. Remember the addross— Schroder, Hooper & Co., directly opposite the Club Hotel, Rpad their advertisement on-the front page of,this paper,— (Advt).' ■. ' ■'"■.''
