Works, re railway works at Waiohine j to 1 Clerk of Trust Lands, re, obstruction in East-street; to' Messrs Fabian Bros., re Same; to Clerk ot County Council, ithospital subsidy. : Inwards—Nil. • BEFORI3. . . The 'Public W&rks Committee's report wasroad,Recommending ceriain ..works, and theippointment of an overader. Crßaillie moved—That the report be adoptod;?with.the exception of the apv, polntment of.an overseer. , Cr Udy wished to know how the funds stood, as it'would be folly to employ a ; man if you could-not pay him. ' i . The Treasurerreported a credit balance - of £4l Cr Gray would second Or Baillie's motion if the overseer part of, were; cut out.

Cr Udy thought 'that by the appoint- . ment of&p over<eer, .what with other-' salaries there would b# very little left for publio works. Cr Thompson said the Works Committee wished him to say that if an overseer be not appointed,-himself and the other, members of the Committee would resign.' •Or Baillie said that if the overseer he appointed he would insist.'on the voice of the ratepayers being taken on the subject. Cr Gray thought it was very unfair for the Works Committee to say .they would resign if their report would not be adopted, The former Committee .for two years, and were glad to get rid. of the overseer. T.' -- Cr Haigh thought an overseer, if he was appointed, would earn his wages; and if the Council could not" employ one man they might as well shut up..' / ' ;, 'i Cr Hammerich supported: the" appointment of a good working overseer. ''; Crßaillie said that the appointmeht of an overseer would not take any wbrk off the Works Committee.... ' . ! - Cr Thompson said, the;Publio, Works Committee did not want to shirk work. ...Cr-Hanimerich moved as-an amend-meut-That the-report as read be 'adopted. ' '. Four-voted.for the.amendment and ■four against; and.the amendment ws's lost by the casting vote. : Cr Udy would suggest that eaoh Councillor» - where he saw there .' fras ;work necessary to be done, would repott to the Council, and it would save the Works Committee, from meeti(igat all r flhd rather than see an overseer apgointedite would do the-work himself. Cr Baillie agreed with Cr ! Udy's remarks'., : [ Cr Udy would call the attention, of the Works Committee to i the road at Mr Wiggins'. , BE SATES. ' . His Worship wished for an expression of opinion on ihe. question of suing for rates. .■ ' ■ Or Haigh" thought it should be left to the discretion of the collector: he knew whether they could pay or not. Cr Gray agreed with Cr Haigh. 1 Considerable conversational discussion took, place as. to the advisability of the Council as a whole being a Works Committee instead of the present Works Committee.
