Tho celebrated Canterbury coaching stallion Camden is announced to travel this season in the Wairarapa. The trustee in P. H. Hickson's estate, Mr T. A public meeting of Carterton residents is convened for Wednesday evening next for the following business: to consider the present state of the Cemetery; to ask the present Trustees to; resign; and to elect fresh Trustees and general. The Queensland Parliament has instituted a system of postal notes for amounts varying from one shilling up to ten shillings. This. will prove a great convenience for sending small suras of money to a distance. We think that the New Zealand Government might adopt the system with advantage. The absence of Spofforth, the " demon bowler," from the.great match played at the Oval, was due to the- fact that his hand had been maimed by a ball delivered by Franks, and English player, in one of the previous matches. Th 9 Australians accused Franks of throwing the ball, but were over-ruled by the umpire. Spofforth himself is the terror of batsmen, who assert that his balls come as if shot out of a cannon. Franks paid him off in his own coin, About a week ago' two men fell out at Wanganui, and one struck the other on the nose. The blood flowed freely. The bleeding continued at intervals tor about ten days, notwithstanding all the efforts of the doctors. At last the man's life was in serious danger. On Tuesday night last a new doctor appeared upon the scene, and recommended the injection of a small quantity of ergotine (the' active principle of rye). This stopped the hemorrhage at once. Printers' errors are very funny at times, In an American journal lately, there appeared on advertisement notifying that a certain- troupe of British blondes had been " two yean on the road without clothine." This statement astonished the public, and aroused the ire of the " British blondes," who wrathfully demanded an explanation of such a statement, The original copy was sent for by the beleagued editor, when it was found to have been written "two years on the road without closing.' - A considerable difference, you observe—although the aggrieved parties were "blondes," Some splendid shooting was made at the Wimbledon meeting in July last, The European Mail says that the Alfred Prize was woii by Private Whitelaw, Ist Lanark, with only one point short of the highest possible score. At the 600 yards' range for the Queen's Prize, Corporal Scott, of the 13th Cheshire, who had been well up in the previous stages, made the finest shooting ever witnessed upon Wimbledon Common, as bull's-eye succeeded bull's-eye in answer to every shot, the total at the finish being 102, or three points over anything ever recorded in public up to the present day. Scott is therefore the winner,of ; the silver medal,; badge, and £6(Vi; ; f

A contributor to a Ohriatchuroh paper says the following was " the way we got our land :"—An old settler told me that some yeßra ago in this colony whenever he went to apply for some land, which he frequently used to .dp, he would be informed that Mr So-and-sof-a ;big :guii in "the ..district— had 1 already appiiea\ ; The old gentleman couldn't understand it; he was always euchred that way. He was a kind hearted individual, however, and one of the junior clerks in the Land Office requiring some temporary pecuniary assistance, the old gentleman relieved his.necessity. .The young man was grateful, and said, "The-next time you apply for : land, ask to see the application book." "So I do, but Mr So-and-so's name is always there before mine." " The next time you ask observe if his name is written in pencil, and if it is demand to have yours in ink." The old gentleman went again to apply for some land he had "spied out," and sure enough there was a name written in pencil. "Ah !" said he with a sardonic smile, "write mine in ink, will you 1" The boss-clerk colored up, and the way Mr.So-and-so raved is said to have been something awful,

An adjourned general meeting of the Mastevton-Opaki Jockey Club took place on Saturday evening last at the Club Hotel, a fair number of members attending. After Mr Elkins had been voted to the chair, tho minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The balance sheet, which showed the balance in bank to be £1314s 6d, was read by the Secretary and adopted. The following ofticei'B were elected:—MrF. Gray, president ;Mr R. Welch, judge; Mr T. Chamberlain, starter; Mr John Harding, clerk of the scales. The stewards were then ballotted for—eleven members being proposed for the office—the result being that Messrs A. W. Cave, B, Kimberley, R. Campbell, James Macara, G. Farmer, H. Bannister, and A. Elkins were elected. Messrs W. lorns and Manihe'ra were reelected clerks of the course, aiid J. lorns re-elected secretary and treasurer. Messrs C. A. Briggs and M. McKenzie were nominated as members of the club, and Mr T. G. Mason (who was nominated at last meeting) was elected a inoinber. Considerable discussion ensued on the advisability of holding one or two days racing this season. It was ultimately decided to fix the races for one day during the first week in December, it being left to the stewards to appoint the day. Mr F. Gray proposed a vote of thanks to the retiring president, Mr R. G. Williams, and in doing so said the Club owed much of its success to the interest Mr Williams had taken in ' it. Mr T. Chamberlain, in seconding, spoke to the same effect. The vote was carried unanimously. A long and irregular discussion took place on the subject of the last Taratahi-O'arterton race meeting, the majority of those present being of opinion that all the persons whose names appeared on the race cards for that meeting should bo posted as defaulters, and debarred from entering horses under the rules of tho Masterton-Opaki Jockey Club until such time as the stakes now in arrear have been paid over to the creditors. It was unanimously resolved to table a motion to the above effect for the nex general meeting, and ask the Wairarapa, Wellington, and, if thought advisable, other Clubs to endorse this Club's decision in the matter. The meeting then adjourned. The next meeting of stewards will take place on Saturday, 9th October, to arrange a programme.
