Hales deposed that on the 12th inst, prisoner came to him with-M-< ' Quigley and was supplied byhimlrithtwoV blank cheques on the Bank of New.ZeM land, in which witness to oblige applicant; crossed out Masterton and inserted Wellington. The cheque produced for £2os was on one of the two blank cheques which he had giren to him. Mr Quigley deposed that to oblige tie prisoner he had asked Mr Hales for two blank cheques on the Wellington bank, G. Ward deposed that he was in charge of the bar of the Empire Hotel on the 10th iust., when prisoner called for two - drinks and handed him a cheque for £2OOO in payment thereof, subsequently changing it for one of £l, which was' a good one. Sergeant McArdle deposed that, hearing of this £2OOO cheque being presented atTaueru and at Masterton, he asked prisoner for it, who gave it him. He; had ascertained that .the cheque was a valueless one which had apparently been filled in by the prisoner. The prisoner said the £2,000 cheque was a " lark," and that he had no inten-

tion of defrauding anybody.The Court held that the " lark " was a serious one, involving legal consequences and sentenced the prisoner to 24 hours imprisonment. John Chamberlain pro Trustee Estate C.
