BRIDGE WANTED.

[To the.Editor of the Wairakapa Daily. Sir,—An accident, which might have •been attended with fatal consequence*, befel the mailman yesterday, when en route to Alfredton. Crossing a flooded stream some six miles this side of his dosN tination the horse was unable to. rise the opposite bank, and disappeared beneath the murky water, and as a strong current was running,he was swept under the debris of an old bridge, after a time reappearing on the other bank, much to the satisfaction of the rider, who, I may state, had previously scrambled off, fearing premature baldness if he had followed his horse under the bridge. ' As every immigrant imported into the colony cost the country some £25 we have the basis therefore for calculating the cash value ofjevery life sacrificed by drowning, ' &0. As the horse and saddle were valued at £25, I trust the Masterton Highway Board will at once see the advisability of bridging this stream, which can be done for the nominal sum of £3, and thus avert the possible loss of some £SO sterling by investing so trifling a sum as I have stated above. The mailmsn therefore retraced his steps, finding shelter for the night at the homestead of Messrs Rutherfurd and Gibson. In the morning he was furnished with a fresh horse, and went on his way rejoicing, Quantum Suff. ■——=.
