GREYTOWN RAILWAY CELEBRATION.
- ■'■.;'■■♦—_ ■., To the Editor of the Wairarapa Daiw Grytown, 17th April. Sir,—Will you kindly through your columns allow me to set the mind of the outside public at rest with regard to the proposed opening celebration of the railway to Greytown, as some few may be led astray by a local in the local paper of Saturday, wherein the celebration is termed a " public-house affair.' 1 The following names ou the Committee should certainly be a guarantee that the statement is false:—His Worship 'the 'Mayor, Crs Baillie, Gray, Barnard, and Fuller, and Messrs Fentouy Bock, and Salmon." Is it because Mr Salmon (who has more energy arid time at his disposal than any other member of the Committee) has exerted himself to form this Committee, after others who should have .done so failed ? Or is it because a public meeting was not convened by advertisement 1 If the former,! think it a -standing disgrace for the Editor to allow such a paragraph to appear- If.the latter, the spirit is a mean-one.- -Or agaiiv,,is it because the that has .not yet rerched a climax,- was" wit mentioned' by the Com. mittee." If so, pfcy it is that a paper pub. failed; in >tbe, : djstriot';interested should such a BelfisXßpirjt.'; Evaii the names, on .the subscription list are a sufficient guaranv
tee that no selfish.'object is being' sought by any individual member of the Committee, embracing, as it does, the leading residents of the Borough. Again, the fact of the; meetings --not being held at an hotel is. another proof, if such were required, Exception is taken by one or two individuals to the meeting not being called-by.advert'iseinent'. J3eit right or wrong, it must be known that you have recommended through the Daily on two occasions, some. six weeks since, that steps should be taken 'to fittingly celebrate the opening of the line, the diaseuters have had every opportunity of convening a public meeting had they so desired. As it is, all those who were thought likely to attend were invited |to meet and- discuss the advisability of forming a Committee., At that meeting, there were seven gentlemen present, withlrßaillie in the|chai.-, and it was resolved, as'the time was bo far advanced, to form a committee at once, which was done, and the action will prove itself. It should be satisfactory to you to know the programme recommended by you has been adopted almost in its entirety, while the paper here has never offered a sugges ion. . The Committee have already collected £4O, which, added to the amounts for the sale of booths and the entries, will give nearly £6O for prizesand incidentals, Apologising for troubling you so far, lam, &c, One of the Public.
