INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES REPORT.
I have the honor-to submit to you for your information the 'followinsj report, and in doing so, I would in the first instance, call the attention'' of the Council to the fact that.the.bridge over the creek near to Mr D',' Donald's gate, at the. Manaia, is getting in a very bad state.' 'The. water-Is' fast cnttin? away a great portion of the ;Toad, making it very dangerous for waggons and other vehicles passing, particularly after night, This needs immediate' remedy. FIRES AND FOUL CHIMNEYS. . In a place like Masterton, where the' houses are chiefly of wood material, it is important for the preservation of life and property that the utmost care should be takeu, and that persons who are in the habit of sweeping chimneys should be registered for Buch employment, and that' they Bhould have good and suitable machinery for the performance of the work required efficiently, otherwise should any damage arise through their negligence they should be held responsible, With regard to the late fire at Mr Payton's, I am told that a man had not long before been employed to clean the ohimney, but in copsequeuce of the bad maohinery used, the work was uot half done. ■ I am of opinion that if the fire had happened a week'earlier disastrous results might have been realised,, and its effects felt in the Borough at this moment. : "' t UWW. By the direction of the Town Clerk, I have, on two or three ocoasiqns, looked after and detected persons hawking goods' for sale jn the Borough (not' being residents therein) withoutjicenses,- to the injury of "the local tradesmen, and in I opposition to the laws .of the .'Ooiinoil.' Those persons I warned as to the obnse!;queho'es if they ■ persisted without the; licence, ; whioh, I believe, in each oase has' been applied for and granted to them, and the law complied with, although, perhaps, reluctantly paid for,
I have also to state that Messrs Schroder & Hooper, drapers, have complained to mo of the filthy state of, Queen-street in front of their shop, by which, they say, considerable damage is done to their shop goods, particularly in dry and windy weather, I have, &c„ T.-W.-Shute. P.B,—lt is quite true that Queen-street is getting very dirty at various places, but can only be remedied by an order of the Council after being thus informed.
