TINUI
(FKOSI OUR OWN'CORRESPONDENT,):
February 11th. ■ On Saturday the return cricket :roatch-r----linui and.Wliareama Cricket Club against the Whakataki and. Castle Point eleven —came off in Messrs Maunsell's paddock. The day was beautiful, but rather too hot. However, a< number of ..people availed themselves cjf the opportunity of witnessing this match, which I 'heard resulted in the Castle Point team coming off victorious.
Tirautnea and Moroa wool is- still coming in, but buainiiss generally is very dull, and there is but little sign of any improvement.
The Rev Mr Goaaett held divine service here on Sunday. The cone relation twas small, Mr Goasett's discourse was very good. It is surprising what little interest is taken in church matters. Was it otherwise the attendance would be larger./ Mr Goaaett intimated that in future the service would be once a month, instead of fortnightly. On Monday evening the old School Committee met, as there was business to transact.. Mr E. Maunsell (Chairman) submitted various applications from teachers for the school. After various opinions were expressed, the Committee were' unanimous in recommending a Mr Hand!n? ' 8 the situation! The Chairman also informed the Cpmittee that it was the Inspector's intention to examine the school on the 18th inst. The Committee. considered, and justly to, that this would be simply inconsistent, taking into consideration the fact th(it the children have been without school fpr two months would not be prepai'ed.for an examination just now, more especially to place them on the same footing as other schools. It was' therefore resolved that the Chairman telegraph to the Inspector, suggesting the appointment of Mr Handley as teacher to the Tinui School, aud that Mr Lee should postpone the examination, so as to allow the children to prepare for it. A flock of about 200 splendid Lincoln rams ..passed through here en route for Wellington last evening, They are from Mr 6. Hunter's station at Porangahau, Mr Bennett, a- temporary teacher, arrived here this evening, to re-open the school, pending the appoiritment of a permanent teacher. The school will therefore, re-'open to-morrow, and not before ;time! . . - •" • ;
'■ We are'beginning to feel th? long .drought, and a few, good showers wopld do immense'.gbiid just'now,
