EEATHERSTON. (FROM OUlt OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Jan. 13th. On Sunday last a considerable nuriiber of persons visited our quartz reefs, and 801116 testa were made of stone taken from the reef. In. the eyes of most present the business seemed to be carried on in a straightforward manner; one or two, however, doubted. If there are any real doubts, and a genuine cause for them, the sooner they are substantiated or dissolved the better. Most of the tests made on Sunday were very good, if genuine, but the matter will soon be set right, as some of our people who are thoroughly trustworthy intend to go down in a few days, take out the stone with their own hands and crush, when we hope to have something good and authentic. Judging from the actions of Brandon and party we are inclined to believe in the reefs. They are not anxious to sell, and are doing a large amount of labor and expending money in 1 oad making from their roef to the Bite for the machinery. Our State school re-opens on Monday next, and early in the week, weather permitting, the children are to have a picnic. The School Committee met on Monday night, and arrangements were made for making reports and balance-sheets. The I committee are proud to report the very high lesulta from the school for the past 3 years. Your contemporary in a late issue remarked thatthe children were not to have prizes (1) this year, on account of the want of funds at the disposal of the Committee's disposal Ihis is incorrect. No rewards have been distributed by the people of Featherston since 1877, and I think it will be some time yet before a distribution takes place. In fact the school is found to work better without them, as the results show, and when a matter of seventy books are distributed in one sohool, they cease to be prizes, and often cause disappointment. Every provision is made for the childrens' happiness in other ways, and in no place are school and school duties more attractive, and more highly appreciated by the scholars. F, EL Wood & Co,, held their usual fortnightly sale in the Wairarapa Yards to-day. The sale was well attended, and stock well represented, but the reserves proved to high. One lot had a good bid from Mr A. Matthews, but it was not good enough for the reserve. The consequence is that it [was not sold, and I do not know tliat any business was done worth mentioning. The reserves are I higher than the times admit, and while they are so the sales will not be successful,
