PER PRESS AGENCY, WELLINGTON. Friday, PARLIAMENTARY. The Council met at 10 a.m, Whitaker pointed out that the action of the Council embarrassed the Government, and they could not agree to striking outworks they had under contract. He asked that the Bill be re-committed for the purpose of restoring lines regarding which contracts were entered into, Government undertaking to guarantee that no other works would be carried out.
The Bill was recommitted, and Waikato to Tarimaki struck out; Nelson to Greymouth was made to read Nelson to Round ell, and from Greymouth to Kelson Creek, with harbor works at Greymouth; Picton to Hurunui was made to read Picton to Awatere; the East and West Coast lino to Greymouth or Hokitika was struck out.
The Appropriation Bill passed. When the Bill came back to the House of Representatives, striking out Waikato to Taranaki lino occasioned a very animated debate. Moss and Gisborne strongly opposed the striking out, on the ground that the work was national in character, as it would pacificate the King country and obliterate the native difficulty. It was unfair to the House and to Auckland members, and suggested that the Government were not sincere in the matter.
Oliver said thd action of the Council would make little difference. They would prosecute the surveys and explorations as rapidly as means permitted. Bryce denied that there was the slightest foundation for the statement of Rewi becoming estranged from the colony. After further discussion the House divided on Gisborne's amendment to disagree with amendments of the Council in Public Works Bill, The amendments wese agreed to by 22 to 15. Hall and Rollesfcon voted with the ayes, Bryce and Atkinson with the noes. Hall explained that the Government would have to sacrifice the Bill if they insisted 011 the Waikato-Taranaki line, The Immigration and Appropriation Acts were sent down for the Council. The House was prorogued at three; the Penguin taking the Southern members, BLENHEIM. Thursday, A petition in favor of Dsherty is in preparation, AUCKLAND. Thursday. A meeting of machinery owners passed a resolution condemning the tax on machinery under the property tax. The fire risk in the New Zealand Insurance Company in California taken over by the California]! Company, is greatly overstated. The New Zealand Insurance Company still continues to write in the city and county of San Francisco, Arizona and Washington territory.
